The History of LWR: From Unclaimed Land to 36,000 Residents

Lakewood Ranch, your home, is all thanks to a wealthy businessman named John Schroeder from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. John came to Manatee County in the early 1900s and began purchasing land that is now known as the Schroeder-Manatee Ranch (SMR).

In 1922, the Uihlein family acquired the land and continued efforts to expand agricultural operations including cattle ranching, vegetable and citrus farming, and shell and turf mining. Fast forward to 1994, real estate development officially started. The very first village was Summerfield. After that, Riverwalk, Edgewater, The Country Club, and Greenbrook were developed.

Lakewood Ranch, the #1 multi-generational community in the United States, is now home to more than 36,000 residents and provides over 16,000 jobs. Fastly growing, the family wanted Lakewood Ranch to be more than just a place to live, wanted it to be home, so they helped to form and create Lakewood Ranch Community Activities!

For more than 19 years, Community Activities has been providing residents with entertaining events, such as Eggstravaganza, BooFest, Holidays Around The Ranch, Tribute to Heroes, and more! Community Activities also provides residents with more than 60 active community groups and social clubs that reflect the diversity of interests and causes through which to socialize and gather. We work closely with residents to keep clubs current and can be contacted to start new clubs!

Community Activities also developed a Sponsorship program to help promote local businesses that invest their resources into our events. When sponsors participate in these events, they are able to interact face-to-face with residents, families, and guests!
